Full Day
Drive through LEVADIA and ARACHOVA (famous for its bright multi colored carpets) arrive in DELPHI.
Nestled at the base of Mount Parnassos, within the distinctive embrace of the twin cliffs known as the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, home to the most renowned oracle in ancient Greece. Delphi was considered the world’s center. According to legend, this is the exact spot where two eagles, released by Zeus from opposite ends of the universe to locate the world’s navel, met.
Set amidst a breathtaking natural landscape, the sanctuary of Delphi served for centuries as the cultural and religious heart of the Hellenic world, symbolizing unity and hosting the Pythian Games—Greece’s second most significant athletic festival after the Olympics—held every four years. From the 6th to the 4th century BC, the Delphic oracle reached its height of influence and trustworthiness. The prophetic messages were delivered by the Pythia, a priestess, and then interpreted by Apollo’s priests. Rulers, city-states, and ordinary citizens alike sought guidance from this oracle, offering generous gifts in gratitude and helping spread its fame far beyond Greece.
The oracle was believed to have existed since time immemorial and was credited with foretelling critical events such as the Deukalion flood catastrophe, the Argonauts’ voyage, and the Trojan War. Visitors can explore both the archaeological site and its museum, where among numerous priceless artifacts is displayed the exceptional bronze statue of the Charioteer. This masterpiece was dedicated to Apollo by Polyzalos, tyrant of Gela, in 478 B.C., commemorating his victory in the chariot race at the Pythian Games. This extraordinary sculpture exemplifies the “severe” Attic style and is undoubtedly crafted by a master artist.
