In the early afternoon, you will drive down the coast to Cape Sounion dominated by the spectacular Temple of Poseidon. Return to Athens in the early evening.
For dinner, visit Lycavittos hill or one of the numerous roof top restaurants to enjoy the magnificent night view to the Acropolis.
El. Venizelou [ex Panepistimiou street] - National Archaeological museum
This morning we will walk down one of the oldest streets of Athens. Initially designed as boulevard (former name Voulevartou Str.) and one of the busiest streets in Athens as it connects Syntagma Square with Omonia Square. Some of the most remarkable and representative public buildings in Athens, many of which are typical trademarks of the city, are built on this wide avenue: Metochiko Tameio Stratou Building (Army Share Fund Building), Iliou Melathron, Archeological Society Mansion, Aghios Dionisios Catholic Church, Athens Ophthalmiatric Clinic, Bank of Greece Mansion… And of course, here, we will also walk by Three Temples of Education (“Athenian Trilogy”): Athens Academy (1859-1887), The University (1839-1864) and the National Library (1887-1902).
These three mansions were built at the same time by two well-known Danish architects the Hansen brothers, who lived in Greece during that period.
Our walk will end at the National Archaeological Museum, the largest one in Greece!
The rich collections on display, comprising more than 11,000 exhibits, provide a panorama of Greek civilization from the dawn of Prehistory to Late Antiquity.
Amongst other, we will not miss the famous Antikythera device, a scientific instrument of the 1st century B.C. used for astronomical and calendrical calculations!
